Scout team QB gets ton of credit

From Staff Reports

Freshman quarterback LaBrone Mitchell was given a lot of credit for Saturday's victory, and he didn't even take a snap. Mitchell ran the Bulldogs' scout team where his duty was to emulate South Carolina quarterback Anthony Wright.
Mitchell's speed proved a good test for the Bulldog defense, which was able to keep the shifty Gamecock from being a major factor in the game.
"That's something the normal fan never knows, the hard work that LaBrone Mitchell put in to help us win this game," Bulldog defensive coordinator Joe Kines said. "Obviously it's hard to get a picture of that in practice but he did the best he could."
CRAMPING UP: Georgia players were at a loss as to why 14 different Bulldogs had to leave the game with cramps.
Quarterback Mike Bobo left in the third quarter, but returned to finish the contest. Running backs Patrick Pass, Olandis Gary, Champ Bailey and Hines Ward also suffered the symptoms, but each also came back to play.
"I don't know what it was. I don't know if it was the lunch we ate or what," Ward said. "It was a freaky moment to have three of our starters in their with IVs. That's something we don't need."
The news wasn't quite as good for starting left guard Steve Herndon and noseguard Emarlos Leroy. Herndon suffered a sprained knee, while Leroy sprained an ankle. Their status will be updated today.
SMART INTERCEPTIONS: Kirby Smart's two interceptions give him four for his career. The last Bulldog to pick off two passes in a game was Champ Bailey, who had two against Georgia Tech last year.
BOBO MOVES UP: Bobo moved up in several career categories for the Bulldogs, including a move into third place for career passing yardage with 4,064, completions (278) and fourth place in passing attempts (511).
DID YOU KNOW: The last time Georgia won a game without scoring in the second half came in the national championship season of 1980 when it defeated Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl 17-10.
CITRUS BOWL: Even though the season is just three weeks old, representatives of the Citrus Bowl were in attendance at Saturday's game.
According to Alliance rules, the Citrus Bowl will get the first choice of the SEC teams not selected by the Alliance. That team will be matched against the first choice of Big 10 squads not picked by the Alliance, providing that team has no more than one loss differential from the available team with the fewest losses.
UGA HONORED: Before the game, Uga V, the Bulldogs' live mascot, was presented with a medal that read: "Presented to Uga V from the fans and football of the University of Georgia in recognition of being named The Nation's No. 1 Mascot."
Uga V appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in April with that designation.
"A lot of people are delighted with the recognition," said Sonny Seiler, Uga V's owner. "Sports Illustrated gave him the title, but they only told us what we've known all along. But we were really surprised to get him on the cover. That was really the icing on the cake."
HALL OF FAME: Former Georgia coach Wally Butts will be inducted posthumously into the National Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 9, and Georgia recognized him before the game Saturday. The Hall of Fame plaque was presented to his three daughters.
"We are just absolutely thrilled to death over all the university has done for us," Nancy Butts Murray said. "I think that we feel that it was overdue, but I think that makes it all the sweeter."
In his 22 years as football coach, Butts led Georgia to six bowl appearances, four SEC championships and 140 victories.
